What Are We Learning This Week?

Math: Topic 5.4~ 5.7: Adding up to subtract using an open number line; breaking apart to subtract and subtracting using compensation.

Science: Habitats: How do plants, animals, and people live in their habitat? Introducing the ocean habitat.

Leadership: Practicing for holiday performance. 

Reading:  Theodore Roosevelt: The Adventurous President.

Language: Asking & answering questions, text features, and historical events.

Writing: Writing an opinion essay and providing reasons for the opinion.

Conventions: Capitals~ Geographic names.

Phonics Skill Words: Plurals~ the ending -s is added to make most words plural. The ending -es is added to words that end in sh, ch, tch, s, ss or x to make plurals.

** Those of you who have Success Academy kiddos; there will be no academy November 9~18.  We will resume the week of November 28. :)

** On Monday, your kiddo will be bringing home a green field trip permission slip. We will be taking a bus to see The Nutcracker. Because there was a limit on tickets, each class is allowed only two chaperones. The chaperones will need to drive themselves to the theater in San Bernardino. After I collect all of the permission slips, I will then place the names of those who would like to chaperone into a hat and two names will be drawn. I will then notify the two lucky winners. 

**Monday, November 14 is parent teacher conferences. Please be mindful of your conference time. I have a very tight schedule that I need to follow. A Parent Square conference reminder will be sent to you sometime this week.

4.7~ 4.8 & Unit 4 assessment : Using mental math strategies, drawings, models and equations to add three or four 2-digit numbers in word problems. Topic 5.1 ~ Subtract tens & ones on a hundreds chart.

Science: Habitats: How do plants, animals, and people live in their habitat? Reviewing wetlands.

Leadership: ROAR 

Reading:  Money Matters & I Wanna Iguana

Language: Asking & answering questions, story structure, point of view and character traits.

Math: Topic 4~ Fluently adding within 100.

4.1~ 4.4: Adding using place value and partial sums, modeling to add 2-digit numbers, adding 2-digit numbers & explaining the work.

Science: Habitats: How do plants, animals, and people live in their habitat? Reviewing forest habitat assignment & field trip. Introducing new habitat~ wetlands.

Leadership: ROAR song & prepping for our assembly.

Reading:  Alexander, Who Use to Be Rich Last Sunday & A Chair for My Mother.

Language: Illustrations, compare points of view and compare characters.

Writing: Describing characters' responses & choices, using sequence words, & revising by adding descriptive details.

Conventions: Plural possessives, verbs, & compound sentences. 

Phonics Skill: Digraphs ar, or, ore, oar. Some words we learn by remembering the letters. Other words we can sound out. We can blend longer words with /ar/ and /or/ by dividing them into syllables. When a two-syllable word has two consonants in the middle, we usually divide the word into syllables between the two consonants. Read one syllables at a time and then say them together.

Writing: Write about a character's actions, write how illustrations show character, write a narrative for an event, write a new beginning & write a dialogue.

Conventions: Singular possessives & possessive pronouns. 

Phonics Skill: Digraphs ch, tch, sh, th, wh. (The sound /ch/ may be spelled ch or tch. The digraph tch never begins a word. When a consonant digraph appears with another consonant, the sound of the digraph and the sound of the consonant are blended together).

Phonics Skill: Endings: -s, -ed, -ing (When a word ends in a short vowel and one consonant, we double the consonant before adding -ed and -ing. We do not double the consonant before adding -s. We drop the final e before adding -ed or -ing to words ending in e).
